Alaska Journeyman:

Get ready for the exam with the Alaska 2014 Journeyman Electrician Study Guide, available at Brown Technical Publications.

The State of Alaska recognizes three different categories of journeyman electrician (listed below). You may only apply for journeyman status if you have performed appropriate electrical labor under supervison.

To verify your hours of experience, submit a notarized State of Alaska Experience Verification Form or company letterhead, or document verified through an Alaska based union.

You need: (1) a current application, (2) original verification of the appropriate number of hours for the license requested, and (3) the $50 application/test fee. All three items must be submitted together as a packet before requesting a test date. You must turn in your application at least two weeks prior to the date you would like to test.

Alaska Masters:

Get ready to become an electrical administrator in Alaska. To prepare for the examination, get the Alaska 2014 Master Electrician Study Guide by Ray Holder (available only at Brown Technical Publications http://www.browntechnical.org/).

The Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development licenses Electrical Administrators. To obtain a license by exam, use the Electrical Administrator License Application available at: https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/portals/5/pub/ead4088.pdf

Administrator Licenses are available in the following categories:

• Unlimited Commercial Wiring (UCW)

• Inside Communications (IC)

• Residential Wiring (RW)

• Outside Communications (OC)

• Controls and Control Wiring (CNTL)

• Unlimited Line Work Outside (UL)

Each category has its own prerequisites for testing. These may include:

• Construction management experience in the relevant category

• A degree in electrical engineering or certificate from a trade school

• Experience as a journeyman lineman

• Registration as an electrical engineer

• Experience as an electrical inspector or instructor

Check the Electrical Administrator License Application for the requirements for each category. In addition, all applicants for testing will need to provide a “Certificate in Support of Applicant’s Experience and Qualifications” from three persons who are licensed in the electrical industry in any state. Copies are provided on the Application. Individuals completing the form must have personal knowledge of your work experience and qualifications.

State Electrical Licensing Requirements

Applicants for electrical journeyman and journeyman lineman need 8,000 hours of legally obtained experience in the trade subject to the National Electrical Code for electricians or National Electrical Safety Code for lineman. A notarized letter from a former employer or an Alaska based union attesting to experience is also required.

Alaska does not have any state reciprocity agreements for Journeyman Electricians.
