Colorado Journeyman:

Electricians in Colorado are licenced by the State Electrical Board only. They need to submit the Affidavit of Experience Form to verify the experience prerequisites for the Exam and license. To get ready for the exam, find your copy of the NEC (available at Brown Technical Publications).

Residential wireman

Applicants for a Colorado residential wireman's license need four thousand hours earned in no less than two years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power.

Journeyman Electrician

Applicants for a Colorado journeyman electrician's license need eight thousand hours earned in no less than four years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power; with a minimum of four thousand hours earned in no less than two years of that time being commercial and/or industrial work. Verification of experience must state the hours and months of the time spent performing residential and commercial/industrial wiring.

In addition, applicants will need documentation to prove 288 hours of approved electrical education during the period of their apprenticeship. See Electrical Rules and Regulations 4.4

Note: Applicants for the journeyman examination who hold a residential wireman license must also be actively registered as an apprentice. See the third page of the application (at bottom).

There are three acceptible cominations of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years and 10,000 hours of experience in the wiring for light, heat and power with a minimum of 2 years and 4,000 hours in commercial and/or industrial work
  • Be a graduate of an electrical trade school or community college approved by the Board and a minimum of 4 years and 8,000 hours of practical experience in electrical work
  • Be a graduate electrical engineer of an accredited college or university and a minimum of 1 year and 2,000 hours of practical electrical experience wiring for light, heat and power.

State Electrical Licensing Requirements

The State Electrical Board licenses, registers, and regulates electricians, apprentices, and electrical contractors. The board does not regulate communication systems, elevators or passenger conveyors, bridge or highway projects, or data processing systems.
